Cyclists getting doused with a bucket of water

Staying cool in the heat

Sunday, May 27, 2018.  Fourteen avid cyclists braved the mid-90 degree heat this afternoon to complete a 22 mile training ride. Rode mostly on the at least partially shaded Constitution Trail from Tipton to the west end of the trail — about 11 miles each way. Stopped as needed for shade and hydration breaks.

Tuesday evening training ride

Tuesday evening training ride

Greetings cycling enthusiasts! Great to see so many riders out for our Tuesday training ride. Because of the stiff NE breeze, we kept our 10 mile ride on the trail and the neighborhoods near Tipton Trails, as you can see. Remember the Ride of Silence Wednesday evening starting at 6:45P from the McLean County History Museum (old courthouse) in downtown Bloomington and ending at the roundabout in uptown Normal. Keep pedaling and see you soon, RB

WTraining Ride Riderse are into Week #2 of the training rides and there has been 20+ riders on the 3 of 4 days when the weather has cooperated. A little wind just adds to the fitness value of the ride! Thanks to all our volunteer Leaders & Sweeps for sharing their expertise and modeling safe riding procedures. Training rides start Tuesday, May 1st!  Whether you are new to cycling or want to experience the fun of biking on the open road, these free sessions will help you increase your skills and endurance and have fun at the same time.   The rides will be Sunday afternoon (1:30pm from Tipton Park), and Tuesday (5:45pm – Tipton Park) and Thursday (5:45pm – Rosa Parks Commons) evenings.  The first week, beginning May 1st, rides are 4-6 miles in length, and will gradually get longer, working up to 30 miles. You don’t need to be a club member to ride, but helmets are required.  Join us as we ride, help others get used to group rides, and emphasize safety.

Volunteers are still needed to lead and sweep these Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday rides.  To volunteer, simply contact Rick Boser by email (rick.boser@gmail.com0) to receive a link to SignUpGenius.  Many thanks!!!

P.S. – Late cancellations due to weather will be posted to the Wheelers Facebook page.

ATTENTION WHEELER MEMBERS:

The “official” riding season kicks off on Tuesday, May 1st, with the first Training Ride. Weekend rides begin the following weekend. Training Ride Leaders and Sweeps can volunteer on SignUpGenius (same as last year) and you may have already received an invitation to do so.

New this year, a second SignUpGenius will also be used to identify leaders and ride descriptions for our Weekend & weekday Mellow Rides (starting after the Metric). The purpose of the advanced sign-up is to increase bicycle ridership among members and attract non-members to our rides by providing a range of themed riding options. More details will be provided on SignUpGenius.

Please note that SignUpGenius will be used to facilitate ride leadership only. Rides will then be posted on the website and distributed by weekly emails.

If you are interested in leading any of our rides and are not yet receiving invitations to SignUpGenius, please contact Rick Boser (rick.boser@gmail.com) by email and you will be added to the list. Hope to see you on the bicycle soon!

Mark your calendars for June 16th for the 37th Annual Wheeler Metric! This is the Wheelers’ signature fundraising event for community bicycling-related programs.  Note that our Metric is being held on the 3rd Saturday of the month instead of the 2nd….

This year, proceeds from the Metric will benefit the newly formed Bike Co-op located in Bloomington [map it].  The Bike Co-op is one of the many programs offered by the West Bloomington Revitalization Project (WBRP).  This Pantagraph Article is a great primer on the Bike Co-op and its Earn a Bike Program.  To learn more about WBRP, visit the WBRP’s website!

To keep tabs on registration and other updates for the Metric, be sure to check back on the Spring Metric page.

See you there!
